Interestingly, their cytoplasmic structure appears inadequate for direct physical coupling to intracellular signalling proteins. For nearly two decades, immunologists have searched for transducers. In the cited paper, we found that stimulation of permeabilized B cells with aluminum fluoride in the presence of 32p-ato led to efficient radiolabeling of glycoprotein heterodimers that could be immunoprecipitated with the receptor. The heterodimers have more recently been identified by other researchers as products of the previous cloned mb-1 and B29 genes.
