L. Li et al., "A small molecule Smac mimic potentiates TRAIL- and TNFα-mediated cell death," Science, 305:1471–4, Sept. 3, 2004.

This is the first study in which a true Smac mimetic was synthesized to antagonize the inhibitor-of-apoptosis (IAP) proteins. … Importantly, these compounds synergize with TNFα and TRAIL [tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand] to potently induce caspase activation and cell death in a human glioblastoma cell line that is known to be resistant to DNA-damage-induced apoptosis.

N. Gilbert et al., "Chromatin architecture of the human genome; gene-rich domains are enriched in open chromatin fibers," Cell, 118:555–66, Sept. 3, 2004.

This paper redefines our understanding of chromosome cytology by using biophysical and genomic methods to show that open chromatin is correlated with high gene ...
