This study ... challenges the view that lipid rafts exist as large and stable physical structures with functional roles, at least in T cells. Using FRET [fluorescence resonance energy transfer] analysis, they show that contrary to existing data, lipid rafts may not have a role in the activation of T cells. The question is, what techniques will satisfy the stringent requirements for proof that lipid rafts exist and that they are important for compartmentalizing cell signaling?
