It was initiated because of a steadily rising perinatal mortality rate in Bradford, in spite of a fall in the rest of England and Wales. Several factors were considered responsible, not least of which was the high immigrant Asian population. The outcome of the audit demonstrated inappropriate booking of patients for general practitioner care and unacceptable arrangements for intrapartum care.
