Michael Karin was born in Tel Aviv and came to the United States in 1975. With his group in the pharmacology department at the University of California, San Diego, he has uncovered key mechanisms of NF-κB signaling. He writes about the importance of this inflammatory pathway in cancer development on page 24. "A link between inflammation and cancer may have been suspected for millennia," he writes. "Nevertheless, the connection has failed to catch on with most oncologists."

Jill Adams left a post as assistant professor of psychiatry at New York University in 2002 and has been writing about science ever since. Since her PhD is in pharmacology, she was hesitant to jump into the molecular genetics fray that surrounds antibody diversification, about which she writes on page 26. But the elegance of the mechanism drew her in. "It's amazing that this enzyme can mutate DNA in such a controlled fashion."
