Masami Horikoshi (Rockefeller University, New York): "This paper describes the cloning of the gene encoding the TATA box [a conserved sequence of bases]-binding factor TFIID [transcription factor IID], which we and others have shown to be a key factor in both basic promoter activation and transcriptional regulatory pathways. Since the TATA box is located between the binding sites for regulatory factors and the transcription initiation site, the cloning of the TFIID gene will aid us in understanding how regulatory transcription factors communicate with the basic transcriptional machinery to determine overall levels of activities of various promoters in biological processes such as embryogenesis, cellular growth, and tumorgenesis. This paper is one of five papers that ...

Bunsen Burners and Bad Hair Days

Lab safety rules dictate that one must tie back long hair. Rosemarie Hansen learned the hard way when an open flame turned her locks into a lesson.
