Gupta received his B.S. in 1953 and his M.S. in 1955, both in physics from the University of Delhi. In 1963, he earned his doctorate of science in materials science and applied physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Between 1963 and 1966, he taught and did research in advanced materials at the University of Minnesota. From 1966 to 1970, he was a laboratory director at Northrop Corp. of Hawthorne, Calif.
