People: Research!America Organization Elects Duke Chancellor Emeritus As Chairman

The board of directors of Research!America, a nonprofit organization whose focus is on educating the public about the benefits of biomedical research, has elected William G. Anlyan chairman. Anlyan says that, as the new chairman of the Alexandria-Va.-based organization--which has 165 institutional members across the United States--"I see great potential to increase the public's understanding of the importance of biomedical research." Anlyan intends to pay particular attention to broadening the awareness of scientific research among young people in the United States.

The U.S., Anlyan says, is already the clear leader in biomedical research, but he believes the government should be funding more basic studies.

He notes that biomedical research has already led to great progress in medicine. In this regard, he says, "The beginning of September marked the 45th anniversary of the first day I became a third-year medical student at Yale.
