Robert Sauer, who was elected to membership in the National Academy of Sciences in 1996, is a protein chemist and structural biologist. His basic research is aimed at understanding how the amino acid sequence of a protein directs its folding into the proper three-dimensional structure and how this structure mediates biological function. For these studies, he uses small bacteriophage repressor proteins as model systems.
