Two of the most important activities of the common cytokine tumor necrosis factor (TNF) are to signal apoptosis and to initiate NF-kappa B activation. The signaling starts at the TNF receptor 1 (TNFR1) and moves downstream in a series of biochemical reactions, which until recently were mostly unknown.
