Some kits come supplied with reagents to differentiate necrotic cells from apoptotic cells, relying on the fact that the plasma membrane of apoptotic cells, flipping notwithstanding, is still intact. Thus certain dyes taken up by necrotic cells are excluded from apoptotic cells.
