(Philadelphia, PA - August 2002) - The Scientist, an international news magazine for life scientists, has launched a completely new design for its Web site, (www.the-scientist.com) to reflect the new format and style adopted by the print publication last January.

The site's fresh design effectively present it's bi-weekly content and provides easy navigation for its audience of more than 425,000 registered users. A daily news service, where reporters from London and New York report on breaking news in the world of science, is just one new feature implemented to encourage users to visit more frequently.

The 16-year full-text archive of The Scientist back issues has also been completed. This electronic archive makes the earliest issues from the 1980s available, offering a fascinating glimpse of the concerns of scientists over the years. "We take considerable pride in being able to make our entire archive available to anyone, free...

The newly designed site is, effectively, the fourth generation of The Scientist on the Web. In 1992 - almost prehistoric to Internet time - The Scientist launched an experiment with the National Science Foundation whereby text files of each issue were provided through a Gopher site. Nowadays, Gopher seems quaint, but in the late '80s it was the height of Internet sophistication. Through this service, The Scientist was the first regularly published periodical available in full text on the Internet.

In 1995, The Scientist started its own website in partnership with the library of the University of Pennsylvania. Then in 2000, the Website was moved to a commercial provider using the current domain name, www.the-scientist.com

Now the design has changed again, boasting easier navigation, daily news and the complete, full-text archive. Unlimited access is free, with just a simple registration process required. The Scientist strongly encourages everyone to visit the site, not only for the latest news and features, but also for the valuable perspective it offers on the development in the scientific field.
