Because landfills across the country are filling up with diapers, prompting efforts to ban the products in some states, Proctor and Gamble hopes that Martin will prove that disposable diapers are environmentally benign. But the scientist doesn't feel obligated to suppress any damaging results, he says. "If a corporation wants control over the research it funds, it should hire a service lab."
