Abdus Salam has proposed a loose federation of new and existing international bodies that would study basic and applied science and science technology problems of interest in the developing world. The group would include the ICTP in Trieste as well as new or existing centers for genetic engineering and biotechnology, high "technology and material sciences,chemistry and earth sciences.
The center would be an independent organization under the auspices of the Italian government, UNESCO or another United Nations agency, he said. The Third World Academy of Science, which he helped to found in 1985, would play a crucial role.
