Chris Kaiser announced on Monday that he would not be able to take his position as the new director of the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS). He was supposed to start on April 30.
Kaiser, who said he is leaving for personal reasons, is the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s chair of biology. When he was appointed last fall, he promised to work on maintaining budgets for basic research and recruiting underrepresented groups into science, reported ScienceInsider. In his stead, the acting director Judith Greenberg will continue to lead the Institute.
