Kirsten Bomblies, a postdoc at the Max Planck Institute for Developmental Biology, Tübingen, Germany, conducted hundreds of intraspecies crosses of Arabidopsis thaliana. Approximately 2% of these hybrids develop varying degrees of necrosis that appears to be caused by gene interactions that produce an autoimmune-like response.
