The geological survey says that geologist Howard Wilshire violated its guidelines by allowing an environmental activist to accompany him on a survey.

The controversy began in February when Wilshire, a 30-year veteran of the USGS and well-knownin environmentalist circles as an authority on the effects of off-road vehicles, privately surveyed the Eldorado National Forest area in California between Sacramento and Lake Tahoe, where the U.S. Forest Service has proposed to’ allow motorcycle use. He then wrote a letter to the agency detailing his objections to its plan. Worried about the Forest Service plans, he made the inspection on his own ...
