As president of the U.S. Federation of Culture Collections, she works to preserve and increase our knowledge of microbial biodiversity, in part by isolating and cataloging microbes. And as president of the Society for Industrial Microbiology, she works closely with the National Science Foundation and other groups in Washington, D.C. to promote the potential applications of microbes in health care, agriculture, and other areas.
