To help the scientific community reach this goal, Suttie is involved in a number of scientific organizations and currently serves as president of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB). This group represents 10 societies and 44,000 individual biomedical research scientists.

His research involves studies of the mechanism of action of vitamin K as an enzymatic cofactor and investigations into the metabolism of and the nutritional role of this vitamin. He was elected to membership in the National Academy of Sciences in 1996.
