But the $11 million price tag was too high for the 29-year-old, NSF-funded center to afford by itself. So last month NCAR officials announced an agreement with two French science agencies to develop and operate the system. The collaboration is the first such joint international sponsorship of a scientific facility for NCAR, whose meteorologists and atmospheric scientists have been working informally with the French since the early 1980s.
