A Senate panel has approved a proposed budget for the National Science Foundation (NSF), reducing its $6.86 billion annual budget by 2.4 percent, or $162 million.
The House of Representatives had approved a budget that would have kept the NSF’s funding constant, so the final dollar amount will have to be approved by both legislative bodies.
The cut is just one among many that the Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies had to consider for the programs under its watch. This year, its $52.7 billion dollar purse is $626 million less than last year.
The National Institute of Standards and Technology saw a 10 percent drop in its budget as well.
