Harold Slavkin, director of the Center for Craniofacial Molecular Biology at the University of Southern California (USC) School of Dentistry and the George and Mary Lou Boone Professor of Craniofacial Molecular Biology, has been appointed director of the National Institute of Dental Research (NIDR). Slavkin, 57, will assume the position in July, replacing Harald Loe, who retired in June 1994.

"I was overwhelmed and thrilled" to be chosen, Slavkin declares. "I feel very privileged, but at the same time very daunted." He will oversee a staff of about 400 intramural scientists and administrators and an annual budget of more than $174 million, which covers internal as well as extramural investigations (K.Y.
