How the human body reacts to viruses is a perennial yet riveting topic of conversation, even at the tail end of the cold and flu season. Immunologists have long noted that during the acute phase of an antiviral immune response, there is sometimes a massive increase in the number of T cells displaying surface markers of recent activation.
