The Burroughs Wellcome Fund is considering the addition of a seventh “scholar program” comparable in magnitude to its current six. Each of the existing programs award outstanding researchers $300,000 grants over five years, according to Martha G. Peck, executive director of the fund, which is based in Research Triangle Park, N.C.

“Our board is reviewing underfunded areas of basic medical research for new competitive awards,” she says, “and we expect to make an announcement within the next six months.” Peck lists the top three candidate areas for support as molecular aspects of aging, veterinary pharmacology, and pharmacogenetics. She stresses, however, that these three are only tentative candidates at this point. “We’re midway in the [selection] phase,” she adds, “and we’re getting expert opinions.”

Burroughs Wellcome currently makes scholar awards in clinical pharmacology, drug design, immunopharmacology of allergic diseases, molecular parasitology, pharmacoepidemiology, and toxicology. The fund also offers a young investigator ...
