WIKIMEDIA, GALLO & SPERO LLPThe Office of Research Integrity (ORI) has censured Bryan William Doreian, a former physiology researcher at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, for falsifying data in his PhD dissertation, a 2009 paper in the Molecular Biology of the Cell, and a manuscript submitted to Nature Medicine.
Investigators found that Doreian, previously a postdoctoral fellow studying the behavior of adrenalin-containing cells called chromaffin cells during stress response, had massaged numerical values to improve the statistical significance of his results. Among seven separate transgressions listed by the ORI, Doreian was found to have falsified the quantification of particular proteins in response to different stimuli, as reported in the published paper, by claiming he’d replicated the experiment in 15 samples when he’d actually done it on fewer.
