CHAIN REACTION: A team led by Jeffrey Wrana of the Hospital for Sick Children clarified events that occur in response to the TGFß superfamily. If there is one thing that is known about the mechanisms that govern signal transduction, it's that not very much is known. When signaling molecules bind to a cellular receptor, they set off a chain of events that carry the signal to the interior-often to the nucleus-of the cell, where they set in motion transcription, differentiation, and release of stored molecules, among other events.
