The human microbiome consists of trillions of commensal microbes. These include bacteria, fungi, and viruses, which naturally reside within the human body and have been documented to affect epigenetic mechanisms, metabolic activity, and immune system function. Researchers are now focusing on how microbiome perturbations impact human health and disease. In particular, certain gut microbiota profiles have been strongly linked to the development of neurological disorders, including autism spectrum disorder, schizophrenia, stress, and depression.
