- Plagiarism mapped: ArXiv founder Paul Ginsparg and his colleague, Daniel Citron, analyzed manuscripts posted to the preprint server between 1991 and 2012 in search of patterns of text reuse, identifying “a negative correlation between the amount of reused text in an article and its influence, as measured by subsequent citations,” the authors wrote in PNAS last week (December 8). The server’s own plagiarism detector is “a fairly sophisticated machine learning logistic classifier,” Ginsparg told ScienceInsider. “It has special ways of detecting block quotes, italicized text, text in quotation marks, as well statements of mathematical theorems, to avoid false positives.”
