How can a small biotech firm penetrate the Japanese market? What kinds of technology are Japanese corporations looking for? How can a partnering agreement protect the commercial interests of the companies inyolved? Across the broad expanse of the Pacific, U.S. and Japanese firms are eying each other with mutual interest—and some trepidation. Enter consulting firm Venture Economics. Together with Arthur Young and Japan Associated Finance Co., Venture Economics is sponsoring a conference on Japan/U.S. strategic partnering on November 17 and 18 in San Francisco. Key players in successful alliances—such as that between Kirin Brewery Company and Plant Genetics Inc.—will speak; over a dozen Japanese firms, including Mitsubishi International and C. Itoh, will specify the types of partnerships in which they wish to enter; and U.S. companies that have formed Japanese alliances, will relate their experiences.
