NIH Names New Extramural Research Head

Michael Lauer, director of the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute’s Division of Cardiovascular Sciences, has worked for the National Institutes of Health since 2007.

NIHFollowing Sally Rockey’s June resignation announcement, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has chosen Michael Lauer as its next deputy director of extramural research. Lauer, who has worked for the NIH since 2007, most recently as director of the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute’s Division of Cardiovascular Sciences, will head up the branch of the agency in charge of extramural grants, among other things.

“[Lauer] brings both research expertise and administrative skills to the job, as well as keen insights into world of extramural research,” NIH Director Francis Collins said in a September 28 statement. “His demonstrated leadership, scientific acumen, and commitment to health research make him an excellent choice for the position.”
