1. How does the placenta disengage from the uterus and not damage it?
The placenta and uterus are designed to separate during the natural birth process. As the baby moves downward out of the uterus during delivery, the placenta begins to detach as the uterus contracts and changes shape. Continued uterine contractions, the pull of the umbilical cord, gravity, and a build-up of blood behind the placenta all help to expel it. After delivery, the uterine wall heals, the site where the placenta was attached shrinks, and the surface and vitality of the uterus are restored.
