BBC Future spoke with 66-year-old Fran Fulton, a retinitis pigmentosa patient and one of six people in the U.S. to be equipped with the Argus II Visual Prosthesis System, which includes a retinal implant that stimulates visual perception in blind individuals. “When they ‘turned me on’ so to speak it was absolutely the most breathtaking experience,” said Fulton. See The Scientist’s feature, “The Bionic Eye,” on this and other retinal prostheses, published ahead of print. The full October issue, dedicated to the sense of sight, will be online tomorrow (October 1).
