A SUNY graduate student falsifies Western blot data used in meetings, grant applications, and submitted manuscripts

A former graduate student from the State University of New York, Upstate Medical University (SUNY US) was found guilty of falsifying data used in an R01 grant application, a manuscript submitted to the Journal of Cell Biology, and several presentations given at the university, according to the final report issued by the Office of Research Integrity (ORI) yesterday (January 3). Among other things, Jennifer Jamieson altered Western blot data presented at laboratory meetings to show that the signal transduction molecule Vav2 was not associated with the paxillin-binding protein paxillin kinase linker (PKL)—a factor necessary for directed cell migration, which plays key roles in embryonic development, wound repair, and pathological conditions such as tumor metastasis—when in fact it was.
