Having fallen steadily for the last six years, the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) success rate for R01 or equivalent grants rose from an all-time low of 17 percent in 2013 to 19 percent in 2014, the agency reported this month. Still, the percentage of reviewed grants that receive funding is well below what it was 10 years ago, during fiscal year 2004, when the NIH success rate for R01 and like grants was 26 percent.
This chart from Chemical & Engineering News (C&EN) offers a look at success rates, average award amounts, and total funding from fiscal year 2001 through 2014. As C&EN noted, going forward, the success rate “will be watched closely to see if a more positive trend for researchers has emerged.”
