Non-GM salmon in a hatcheryWIKIMEDIA, BUCHANAN-HERMIT
Health Canada and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency last week (May 19) approved AquaBounty Technologies’s genetically modified (GM) AquAdvantage salmon for sale as food in the country, CBC News reported. The fish is the first GM animal approved in Canada for consumption.
“GM foods are becoming more common every day and are part of the regular diets of Canadians,” Health Canada wrote in a statement (via CBC). “[Many] GM foods that have been approved by Health Canada have been consumed in Canada for many years, and are safe and nutritious.”
The US Food and Drug Administration approved AquAdvantage salmon last fall (November 2015).
