John Chute’s lab at the University of California, Los Angeles, studies how specific proteins regulate the recovery of hematopoietic stem cells and the microenvironment after bone marrow activity is decreased due to radiation. In a recent experiment, Christina Termini and colleagues administered recombinant proteins from the family of transmembrane glycoproteins to mice after whole body irradiation. Their preliminary result suggests that the protein treatment enhanced hematopoietic recovery.
